The title refers to the intervallic distances between the pitch material that makes up the content of the composition. The work is based on a pitch series that is subjected to a variety of interpretations, including serial techniques, generative processes, and pattern-oriented transformations. In addition to guiding the pitch material, the intervallic distances inform large-scale phrasing and local rhythmic material throughout the work. The piece is presented in a three-part form without recapitulation.
